Who Are They
SB19 is a five-member Filipino boy band that debuted in 2018, consisting of Josh, Pablo, Stell, Ken, and Justin. They were trained for three years by ShowBT Philippines, beginning in 2016. They are the first Filipino and Southeast Asian act to be nominated in Billboard Music Awards for the Top Social Artist category. They are also the first Southeast Asian act to enter the top 10 of Billboard Social 50 weekly and year-end charts. SB19 promotes its music as part of Pinoy pop (P-pop)—a popular sub-genre of Original Filipino Music.
As its first boy group that underwent Korean-style training, SB19 was given the name that fully represents the partnership between the Philippines and South Korea. “S” and “B” come from the company name, while “19” is actually each digit of the Philippines and South Korea's country code all added up (6+3+8+2)
What Are Their Messages
While most of their lyrics are in Filipino, they appear to offer typical boy band insights: love, relationships, and youthful perspectives. These are generally positive, however with an odd swear word or suggestive lyric. Think One Direction or Jonas Brothers.
What Does A Youthworker Need2Know
SB19 is a sugary, energetic group that will surely only take more of a foothold in the collective psyche of youth today. While there are some things to be wary of (the aforementioned issues), as far as pop music today goes, this is far from most harmless material that your students will be bringing to the table.
