My parents grew up relatively poor. My mom was the fifth daughter of missionary parents and my dad was one of six children in a working-class family. Both of them worked really hard to provide a good childhood for my sister and me. My father was an immigrant to South Africa and had the work ethic common to immigrants around the world.
