Starfield
By Scott Osterbind

Your new record The Saving One is filled with worship songs that will have a huge impact on youth ministry. You cover themes like doubt in the song “Something To Say”. Can you talk about a time when you doubted God, but He proved you wrong with His faithfulness?

I’m not sure there’s one specific time, it seems like it’s a constantly shifting thing. Some days I’m strong in my faith, and some days I feel distant from God. The point of “Something To Say” was to display something I strongly believe: that God can handle our doubts and our questions. I think it’s a healthy part of a relationship with Christ - an honest confession that’s accompanied by a healthy search for answers.

The song “Re-discover You” is about a plea for restoration, can you share this personal story of how you felt the need to rediscover things of God?

“Re-discover You” was born out of a lot of different things. Starfield has existed for 10 years now, and in that time we’ve written tons of songs and played tons of concerts. There comes a point where I have to check myself - realize my own tendency to go through the motions out of familiarity. As we were writing the songs for this record, it seemed like an obvious topic to cover. We desperately need to take steps to keep our faith fresh, to continue to learn new things and find new passion in our walk with God.

You have had the opportunity to tour with Dare 2 Share this past year leading worship for thousands of youth groups. Is there a specific story of someone who was affected by your ministry?

Our role at D2S is very simple - to lead people in worship so that they will draw close to their Creator. Otherwise, we try and get out of the way and let Greg Stier and his team walk out the mission of D2S. It’s an incredibly comfortable situation for us, as we love Greg and believe in what he’s doing, and the weekend gives us time to engage directly with youth workers and with the students.

What is your advice to a youth leader starting a worship band in their youth group?

Be patient. :) The early days of Starfield were just Jon and I with acoustic guitars
leading worship at youth groups, and I have to imagine it was pretty rough at first. Know that early on you’re going to have to seek a balance - some worshippers may not be very good musicians, and some good musicians may not be very worshipful.

Who has influenced Starfield either musically or spiritually?

Our parents are missionaries, and they’re certainly the foundational influence for us. Musically, we were all really influenced by Delirious? in their early days. Back home we live close to a worship leader named Brian Doerksen, and he’s had a great influence on us.

What’s next for Starfield and how can youth leaders be praying for you?

Fatherhood is a big issue right now - Jon just had his first baby and Tim his second on the way in May. It’ll be a slow summer, which will be nice, and then in the fall we’ll do a full tour of the US. Prayers are always appreciated!
