Manic Drive
By Scott Osterbind

Be sure to download Manic Drive's song "Walls" at the bottom of the article.

Your latest song is called “Walls”. The theme of the song seems to be about tearing down walls and working together. How would you suggest that a Youth Worker could use the song “Walls” with his or her students?

Our hope when writing "Walls" was to encourage young believers with the revolutionary message of taking down the barriers we see among Christian communities. God desires for us to work together as one and unite together as the body of Christ. Youth Workers can teach this on a biblical level with events in the early church and get kids excited about working together with different communities and churches.

Recently you had to opportunity be involved with Michael W. Smith and friends to record the song “Come Together Now” for Haiti. Tell us more about your experience with the project and how it will contribute toward the Haiti relief efforts.

Our experience with recording "Come Together Now" was an incredible mix of emotions. When we heard the horrifying events taking place, as Compassion artist we were wanting help the crisis anyway we could. We were happy to assist the crisis and raise money for Haiti. We were also thrilled and honored to sing among legendary artist that we have been listening to since we were young (we were a little nervous entering the studio surrounded by amazing vocalist ha-ha). Thirdly it was humbling to see this multi-platinum selling, Grammy award winning artist literally come together as one under God and serve a cause. It was a blessing to be involved.

I know that helping those who are in need has been apart of your life for a long time. What are some other ministries and organizations have you partnered with?

Manic Drive has been in partnership with Compassion International close to a year and we have been encouraged to see young people as young as 7 years old, using their allowance, take a stand and sponsor a child. We have been moved by their organization and now serve a bigger purpose being active and serving others than just rocking out on stage. MD is about Christians getting involved and being active in and out of the church. Compassion is doing just that sharing the love of Christ through their servant hood to countless people around the world.

Is there an album, book or person that has really inspired you lately?

You know it's interesting...we have grown up listening to Christian/gospel music and been following the CCM scene for as long as I can remember. These artists are the reason why we play Christian music and having the privilege to meet, sing and fellowship with them has been greatly inspiring. While recording "Come together Now" with Michael W. Smith we were very much inspired not just by him as an artist, but as a humble man of God. It was really cool to see our musical heroes carry no ego and have strong hearts for God.

Tell a story about a person who has been influenced by Manic Drive.

There was a young girl who emailed us about her sister who was suffering from serious depression. She decided she was going to end her life by driving her car off a cliff. On her way to the cliff the other sister beforehand unintentionally left a Manic Drive CD in the player and the song "Memories" began. Before she could reach the cliff she began weeping at the wheel and turns the car around. She told her sister later that day what had happen and how this song made her rethink her life. She later rededicated her life to God and sent that email to us.
Mind you this was not the work of Manic Drive, but of God.
