Behind The Song: At The Cross (hear it streaming below!)

At The Cross

In spite of how we feel, what Jesus accomplished at the cross brings freedom. Most of us know this as truth in our heads, but sometimes find it hard to believe in our hearts. This song is a declaration of that fact. No matter how dark our addictions or how heavy our pain, the sacrifice of Christ at the cross brings lasting freedom, leading us to a place in worship where only those who have been rescued can go.

Special bonus! Pocket Full Of Rocks wants to let you know the heart behind the rest of the tracks on Manifesto as well.

Good to Be Here
“Good to be Here” is our unashamed, unabashed sequel to “The Welcome Song.” We love expressing our gratitude at being able to stand before a Holy God and know that we are not only permitted, but truly welcomed. Like “The Welcome Song,” “Good to be Here” serves as the launch point for a Pocket worship set.

Who is This King?
“Who is this King” is one of three on the Manifesto album that was written in a single night of worship in the summer of 2005. Simple in its refrain, it is easy for audiences to grab hold of, making it one of our favorite songs to perform live, though I frequently find myself too emotional to even sing. Listening to an audience sing this song a cappella seems to floor me every time.

Let The Worshippers Arise
"Let The Worshippers Arise" has been part of our set for about 7 years now. Originally written during a worship service in our local church, it never seems to lose its place as an anthem that challenges us to go to a deeper place of worship and surrender. Many people will recognize the song as the title track of a Phillips Craig and Dean album. We are excited to bring a fresh version of this song forward for the "Manifesto" project, and our prayer is that it continues to be used to encourage the body of Christ.

Beautiful You
Psalm 27:4: One thing I ask of the Lord, this is what I seek; that I may dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the Lord and to see him in his temple.

At some point in our journeys of faith, most likely all of us have quoted this verse. We desire to dwell in the house of the Lord, but at times our hearts reside elsewhere. “Beautiful You” is a reminder to us of the Lord’s beauty that is so amazing, “what else could I do but open up my heart and worship?”

Your Love
A thousand times I have asked for forgiveness, and a thousand times He has given me. And with every prayer uttered from a repentant heart, I am captured by a new depth of His love for me. Without a doubt, the greatest weapon to combat our nature is simply His unfailing love toward us – and it is your kindness, Lord, that leads me to repentance.

Water (There is No One Like You)
Written the first week of recording MANIFESTO, this song was a complete surprise and has quickly become one of our favorites. While waiting for the crew to finish some drum tweaks, I escaped to the piano room and it just happened. We knew immediately it had to go on the album, leaving us scratching our heads trying to figure out which song to bump from our original line-up.

Heal
How amazing that God chooses to use us as an extension of His heart to those in need, but may we always remember that this is truly the point - it is Him through us. Outside of Him we have absolutely nothing to offer. This song was written in response to my utter failure to help a hurting friend by my own means. Our prayer is that those who are hurting will hear and know that their hope and healing is in our Heavenly Father alone.

My Everything
No one wishes for tragedy or pain. But the fact remains that life happens, and sometimes life means pain and suffering. To say that He is bigger than my sickness is not just a declaration that we pray as we hope for a miracle; though I definitely believe in miracles. Sometimes the bigger miracle is when we don’t get the answer we hope for, yet we still truly know that He is our everything.

Take Me There
I wrote this song last summer while feeling as though God were a million miles away. I think everyone feels that way at one time or another. Thankfully, getting our focus back doesn’t require a degree in theology or a dictionary of prayers. All it takes is a heart desperate to be back in focus. All my heart could say was, “Take me there.”

Worst of Us
We all feel disqualified at times. It is my sincere hope that this song challenges us to look beyond our failures and take hold of the destiny prepared for us by the King of Heaven. If I have ever written a sermon in a song, this is it. I pray that the lyrics speak for themselves.

There You Are
Sometimes you write a song that is so vulnerable and personal that you wonder if you could ever bear to let others hear it. This is one of those songs. Written during one of the darkest day I have ever endured, it is the only time that I have ever felt completely and utterly helpless and hopeless. But just as the song declares, we have a Heavenly Father who means it when he says, “I will never leave you or forsake you.” To those who are in that place of complete brokenness, may your eyes be open to see the faithfulness of your King. May your ears hear His voice and may your heart know His comfort and hope. May you find your rescue in His embrace.
