Yes, that title seems a little eerie, but I ask that you go with me for a minute. We hear so much teaching and so many ideas about “living the life of worship” that sometimes we miss the whole idea. I want to submit a fresh idea to you about the “life of worship.” You can’t live a life of worship! It is impossible! Now before you take this article and stomp on it, burn it, and shout “heretic!”, hear what I have to say.
God is not asking us to live a life of worship. Why? Because we do not have the power in our human flesh to do it and God never intended us to strive with all of our heart to “live a life of worship.” The life of worship must be lived by another person besides you and me. As a matter of fact, there is only one Person capable of living a true life of worship that pleases our Holy God. His name is Jesus Christ! Listen to what the apostle Paul says: For I am crucified with Christ and I NO LONGER LIVE, but CHRIST LIVES IN ME, the life I live in the body I live by FAITH in the son of God who loved me and gave Himself for me. (Galatians 2:20)
What did Paul mean by “I no longer live?” When you were saved, transformed by the Holy Spirit of God through the work of Christ on the cross, YOU DIED. That old, selfish, rebellious person, who worshipped self rather than God, died. For you have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God.” That means that you “no longer live. (Colossians 3:3) Obviously, you are still physically alive, but your old self died. Now you are alive in Christ.
What this means is that now the life of worship must be lived by Christ through you. Here is the relief: IT IS NOT UP TO YOU! For the rest of your life, it is up to Jesus to live his life through you as you yield over your life to Him moment by moment.
The true life of worship is Christ living out His life through your personality and body. This is what Paul means about us being “living sacrifices.” (Romans 12:1-2) Each second of each moment of your life, you are called by God to die to your will and your strength and your plan and gladly exchange them all for Christ in you. This is the call for every aspect of our lives, not just when we are on stage leading people in worship, but at home, at work, at school, driving in the car, and elsewhere.
The reason so many people fail in their Christian lives and the reason why so many ministries have no spiritual power is that they fail to realize that the Christian life is about Christ living out HIS life through theirs. Until we get this concept into our heads and flowing through our lives, we will never understand the life of worship.
