Where teens are finding summer jobs: More food service, less retail

Far fewer U.S. teens are working during the summer compared with years past, as we reported last month. But it turns out that teens who are finding work these days are more likely to be busing tables or tending a grill than staffing a mall boutique or T-shirt stand. To get a sense of the kinds of jobs teens are working and how that’s changed, we looked at Bureau of Labor Statistics data from July 2000 through July 2014. (Pre-2000 data aren’t comparable.) Young suicidal teens are going to Tumblr for counseling

Unfortunately, suicide has become more and more common among teens and young adults, and recent reports from The Jason Foundation show that suicide is the second leading cause of death among the age range of 10 to 24-year-olds. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention also revealed that in 2013, Americans died from suicide every 12.8 minutes. For suicidal teenage girls with more access to technology than mental health resources, it feels natural to head to Tumblr for counseling and help. Read more

Pre-Teens are Getting Birth Control Implants Without Parental Consent

The Daily Mail reports that public schools in Washington state are now offering girls as young as 11 access to contraception without parental consent. This includes intrauterine contraceptive devices (IUD), which are inserted into the uterus for extended periods of time. Read more

Russell Wilson Appears In Church Q&A; Talks Faith, Abstinence

Seattle Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson made an appearance for a Q&A session at The Rock Church in San Diego over the weekend. Wilson, who is openly devout (and often posts scripture from his official Twitter account) helped lead a discussion about about his faith, his family, and his relationship with singer Ciara.
