Who Is He
Born in London, Sam Smith studied singing and songwriting for most of his life. He seemed to know that he was destined to be a musician, even from an early age. His singular voice and unflinchingly honest lyrics have earned him comparisons to artists such as Adele and Amy Winehouse. His album, In The Lonely Hour, is the highest selling debut album from a solo male British artist in the history of the Billboard charts. Preceded by smash singles “Stay With Me” and “Latch”, Smith infuses sounds of Gospel and Soul with modern production to create something that stands out against most current pop music.
What Are His Messages
Smith writes or co-writes all of his own material so there is a vulnerability to his lyrics that is often jarring, but always relatable. Most of the territory he mines has to do with loneliness and the pain of unrequited love. The songs on In The Lonely Hour are united by the themes of pain, loss and dealing with rejection. This is heavy stuff but it’s also refreshingly honest and open.
